K.U.Leuven kraakt 'onkraakbare' code in diefstalbeveiliging van auto's

Cosic, een onderzoeksafdeling van de K.U.Leuven die zich bezighoudt met elektronische beveiliging, is erin geslaagd een populaire codeersleutel te kraken voor antidiefstalsystemen in auto’s. Daarmee tonen de Leuvense wetenschappers aan dat het systeem niet zo veilig is als beweerd wordt. De resultaten worden voorgesteld op Crypto, een grote internationale conferentie over cryptologie aan de Universiteit van Californië in Santa Barbara.
De codeersleutel is KeeLoq. Die wordt gebruikt door onder meer Fiat, General Motors (eigenaar van onder andere Opel en Saab), Honda, Toyota, Volvo en Volkswagen. De sleutel zit op een chip in de afstandsbediening waarmee de chauffeur de centrale vergrendeling en het antidiefstalsysteem activeert.
Elke afstandsbediening bevat een unieke codeersleutel met achttien triljoen combinaties. Zelfs met 100 computers ter beschikking zou je normaal nog verscheidene tientallen jaren nodig moeten hebben om de sleutel te kraken, door iedere combinatie te proberen
Maar medewerkers van Cosic zijn er samen met Israëlische collega’s in geslaagd om de sleutel te kraken in minder dan één dag. Ze moeten ongeveer een uur bij de afstandsbediening kunnen, als die in een jaszak zit of op een tafel ligt, bijvoorbeeld. Zodra ze de codeersleutel gevonden hebben, kunnen ze het antidiefstalsysteem desactiveren en met de auto wegrijden.
Cosic voerde het onderzoek uit in samenwerking met het departement computerwetenschappen van Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) en de Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Cosic is gespecialiseerd in beveiliging van elektronische informatie-overdracht, zoals bij digitale handtekeningen, betalingen, verkiezingen en identiteitsgegevens.
